A Rant:
What I hate most about England is the social divide … the haves and have nots. Our obsession with having or not having is led to yet another social divide of our own making.
Jon Snow said this week he found himself on the wrong side of the social divide for failing to report a tragedy in the making - the living conditions of the have nots. Bur surely - It is no wonder when we spit ourselves in half - haves and have nots - we are always going to be on the wrong side of the political divide.
Grenfell Tower residents are not he wrong side of the haves but then the political and media elite are on the wrong side of the have nots.
With social class - somehow we knew where we stood. We had the same social, economic and educational status ans aspirations. Things seemed straightforward and predictable. Everyone know their place and took a certain pride in who they were. But the haves and have nots ?
The haves are living out their dreams at the expense of the have nots. The have nots … Well, they have not.
You’re on the wrong side wherever you’re standing - having or not having. Niether actually seems desirable. The haves are self seeking and out of touch whilst the have nots are pitted and disdained for having not.
If you are caught in the web of this particular divide it is difficult to feel at ease and optimistic about the future … There is no place to go but be on the wrong side.
